Trump's Vulgar Conversation

Trump recorded having extremely lewd conversation about women in 2005

Summary: A 2005 recording of Donald Trump speaking in vulgar terms about kissing, groping and trying to have sex with women was released last week. The recording leaked Trump stating “When you’re a star, they let you do it.” Women around the country are offended by the words and actions described by Donald Trump and this could have caused him the race. His response was, “I said it, I was wrong, and I apologize.” But he also called the revelation “a distraction from the issues we are facing today.” Trump states, “This was locker-room banter, a private conversation that took place many years ago and said in a statement, “I apologize if anyone was offended.”

Questions:
  1. Do you believe that this scandal is distraction from the issues we are facing today? Explain.
  2. Trump states, “Anyone who knows me knows these words don’t reflect who I am.” Do you believe these words reflect Trump accurately as a person?
  3. Do you think that Trump needs to apologize directly to women and girls everywhere, and take full responsibility for the utter lack of respect for women shown in his comments on that tape?
  4. How does this compare to the actions of Bill Clinton, who is accused of abusing women, and Hillary Clinton, who is accused of having “bullied, attacked, shamed and intimidated his victims?”
  5. Do you think this caused Trump to lose his chance in the race for president?

  1. Trump's words are disrespectful to women around the world, and he needs to apologize to women and girls everywhere. Even though he did technically apologize during the presidential debate, it seemed insincere and dismissive, in addition, he quickly switched topic. This would not be the first time that he uses profane language when talking about women, the recurrence implies that the words reflect Trump as a man who cannot respect others.

  2. I think that this will be detrimental to Trump's campaign. In the past, his comments have offended and targeted specific demographics such as Hispanics, Muslims, and war veterans, however this time, he is offending a much more broad base of people. Everyone has a mother, daughter, or any other significant female role in their lives.

  3. I certainly believe that Trump's words reflect him as a person. I don't think this is the first time he has used such vulgar language, it's just the first time he's been caught. Prior to that he said that if Ivanka Trump wasn't his daughter he would date her because she's so beautiful. There's nothing wrong with calling your daughter beautiful, but to have the mindset to want to date her and have a relationship with her shows what kind of person he is. What he said about women is demeaning and it's not characteristic of a president. Even if he tries to apologize it won't work, I hope this costs him the election because such a man doesn't deserve to hold the highest position in the nation.

  4. I do not believe that this is a distraction from the issues we are facing today. This is an issue today. Equal rights and respect for women, as well as for other groups such as African Americans, is a huge topic right now, and Trump only proves how bad the situation is. If anything, this draws attention and power to the issues of today. It highlights how we need to make changes.

  5. I don't believe that the scandal is a distraction from today's issues; rather, it is necessary to identifying and combatting our problems. As the potential leader of our country, the beliefs and opinions Trump expresses are extremely important. The scandal provided us with more insight about Trump's beliefs.

  7. I do think these words accurately reflect Donald Trump's attitude. Time and time again he has acted in a disrespectful manner toward women or certain races and believes he can do so simply because he's rich and powerful. This isn't a distraction from today's issues because this is a major issue. Respect and equal rights for women is something that our society is struggling with right now, and the fact that Trump says these vulgar things about women only makes the situation worse. Overall, these comments should not be tolerated and he is clearly not fit to be president.

  8. I believe Trump needs to make another statement apologizing to women across the nation. After the tape came out Trump did not take full responsibility saying “This was locker-room banter” and then going on to give a poor apology. Saying, “ I said it, I was wrong, and I apologize” is not a thorough enough apology. These types of actions can be a huge turning point in an election like this one.

  9. These words represent exactly who Trump is, he is an arrogant misogynist that expects the election to be handed to him. When confronted about his remarks he responded by saying that it was just "locker room talk" he does not try to apologize for having said those things, but rather that he never meant for anybody to hear him say it. He needs to issue a better apology that highlights how he respects women and that this kind of language and mentality is inexcusable. Trump has lost the vote of most women, that for whatever reason still supported him before this was released. The likelihood of Trump being elected for president has decreased significantly.

  10. Do you believe that this scandal is distraction from the issues we are facing today? Explain.

I Believe that this most recent scandal, while a distraction from current issues, is an issue within itself. Not only does Trump's comment reflect the conflicts of a modernized society, but it also highlights the nature of this years election. Donald Trump is ruining American democracy by distracting from real issues and trying to hold an office that he has no qualifications for.

  11. As this definitely has taken a hard hit to Trump's presidential campaign, I do not necessarily believe he is out of the race entirely. Before his vulgar statements were made public, Trump already was behind Clinton in women votes. This inexcusable comment just enraged those that oppose him and made them hate him more than they already do. I do think that he must be a lot more apologetic if he wants to stay in this race. If more and more inappropriate comments are released then Trumps chance in this election will surely be extremely minimal.

  12. I believe Trump needs to take responsibility for his actions. His supporters will believe whatever he says, and if he admits to having said these things to and about women, his supporters may realize how awful he is to women, or they will think he is trustworthy because he holds himself responsible for what he does. Trump's standing apology is weak and does not make any woman feel better about what he has said. Also, he claims this is a distraction to the issues we are facing today, but this is false. Sexism is a large problem in today's society, and the leader of our country should not feel that objectifying women is acceptable in any way.

  13. I don't believe that this is a distraction from issues we are facing today. Donald Trump's statement is an important issue that we are facing today. Having respect for women is a topic that has been discussed recently, such as the wage gap and sexualization of women in the media. Trump making a joke about sexually assaulting women is an issue itself, and is representative of a bigger problem concerning women's rights. He is objectifying women, and the fact that our future president have made these crude remarks is obvious that Trump is unfit to lead the United States.

  14. I do not think his apology was sincere. Although he took responsibility he said it was just "locker room banter" and as such I think he was not actually apologetic for his actions. I think he should have apologized to girls and women everywhere because it was disrespectful and was completely sexist. His vulgar comments looked down on women and made them seem like just objects for him to toy with and as such I do not think his apology was sufficient. I do believe that someone with so much power being caught making those discriminatory statements did however highlight that we still have ways to go to reach equality.

  15. I think that this story was somewhat of a distraction from the real issues in the election, but due to its severity its appearance in the news was justified. Unfortunately for Hillary supporters this news story did not affect the way trump supporters view him and it did not have an affect on the outcome of the election. It did however affect those who now how to live in a country where their leader has said these things about women.

  16. The story was obviously a distraction from the real issues. The media most likely over blew the issue in order to increase viewership. The scandal would've likely hurt his popularity among women most likely and the incident happened in 2005. A person can drastically change in 10 years.

  17. Do you think this caused Trump to lose his chance in the race for president? No I don't think that Trumps racists comments hurt his chances. Trump has built his platform on racism and sexism, so if it hasn't harmed him in the past I don't think it will harm him in the future.
