Donald Trump Says He Will Accept Election Outcome (‘if I Win’)

Summary:

On Thursday Trump suggested that the election was rigged against him, stating “I will totally accept the results of this great and historic presidential election — if I win,”. He claims that he would accept a clear election result, however he established that he "would also reserve [his] right to contest or file a legal challenge in the case of a questionable result". Hillary's running mate, Senator Tim Kaine, argues that the democratic ticket needs “a mandate” this election so that Trump will not be doubtful of the results. Because of Trump's "if I win" statement, it might be possible that Trump is acknowledging defeat.

Questions:

  1.  Do you think Trump is Acknowledging defeat?
  2. Do you think Trumps claims that the election may be rigged against him are justified?
  3. How might Trump's claims affect his outcome in the election?

  1. I don't think that Trump is acknowledging defeat, but rather sees that his chance of becoming president is slowly shrinking and is trying to still emerge victorious. He says that “bottom line, we’re going to win,” thus he is not admitting defeat but is rather challenging our entire Democratic system. As Mr. Kaine says, Trump is attempting to dismantle a "central pillar" of our system, one that has served us well and properly for hundreds of years. Trump's claims that the election is rigged and manipulated against him are not justified because this is the way in which we have managed our elections for many years, and while some races may be extremely close (which in this case, it isn't), the loser always accepts defeat because it's what the constituents want. Trump doesn't want to admit defeat.

  2. Trump's claim will definitely lower his chances of winning this election. After coming out with a statement saying this election is rigged, creates a perception that Trump has a lack of confidence in himself and his country. When a candidate is questioning the results before there are even results make him look concerned and like a sore loser. I believe people are less willing to vote for a candidate who seems to have a lack of confidence and is only worried about losing instead of greatening this country.

  3. Trump statement does not acknowledge his defeat. Instead of trying to figure out his own mistakes, he blames it on the election, claiming it as "rigged". Trump's commentary about the election will definitely lower his chance of winning because it conveys that he does not have confidence in the country. In addition, his comments only make Trump look immature for not accepting defeat but to blame in on the country.

  4. I do not think Trump is acknowledging defeat at all, and conversely I think he's trying to get people to speculate, just as we're doing here. This statement gives the illusion that Trump is closer to winning the election than he actually is. The fact that he feels at least half-way confident in winning makes people who don't watch the news or keep up with real, election-influencing politicians feel that there is a greater chance of him winning, which may influence them to reconsider how they're voting. This statement is simply a legally and politically acceptable stunt to spark even more media interest and portray himself as someone who will fight until the end and not lose. Undecided voters may be swayed to vote for him without even considering his policies or previous offenses, basing their vote solely off of this statement. Unfortunately, I believe Trump is trying to make it appear as if the gap between Clinton and him is closer than it is, to incite people to GOTV and have a perceived effect, no matter which side they support. Voters like a candidate who will fight for what they believe in, but they don't even realize what Trump "believes in."

  5. I do not believe that Trump is acknowledging defeat, he is saying he will not go quietly should he lose. This comment is Trumps attempt at generating more distrust for his opponent. Trump is attempting to blame his failure to win on others, by claiming that it was rigged. Trump is most likely interpreting nobody taking him seriously as the election being rigged against him. I do not think that this is the comment that will destroy his chances at winning, he passed that point a long time ago. Trump will most likely not gain anymore support between now and November, I predict that the percentage of supporters will stagnate if not decrease a little more, but not as a result of this comment alone.

  6. I believe that Trump's claim that the election is rigged is not justified. He is upset at the media and how the depict him and his actions. However, they may appear to be more against him because he seems to have more scandals than even Hilary. In addition, Trump has limited support from his party so that factor may also make him feel like the election is unfair.

  7. I don't believe Trump is acknowledging defeat. He is just saying that the media is portraying him as a terrible candidate which could impact the results. He understands this and realizes that since the media influences politics at such a high rate, that this could really hurt his chances. Overall, Trump is not acknowledging defeat because the race is still very tight.

  8. I think Trump is giving himself a way out in case he loses the election, so he is not looked down upon because he lost. He is saying that the election is rigged against him so everyone knows that if he does lose that it was not his fault.

  9. Clearly, as the results show, Trump's claims did not negatively affect the outcome of the election. Saying those things showed that even Trump was scared because every sign pointed to his defeat. Before the election unraveled, I was excited to see what Trump would say if he lost but that's not what we witnessed. Now, we must wait to see what type of president Trump will be and I am willing to give him a chance because it is what it is.

  10. I don't believe that Trump is acknowledging defeat. His personality shows that he wouldn't be a person who takes defeat lightly due to his ego, and that is also what his "If I win" statement portrays. Trump said this to let his supporters know that he will not accept defeat, making them more loyal.

  11. I don't believe Trump was acknowledging defeat and was just giving an excuse for why he may not win. However, by stating that it is rigged and that the media is portraying him in a negative light, he is taking blame away from himself and demonstrating to his supporters that losing is not because of his abilities as a president but because the odds are stacked against him. However, although the election was close, Trump was elected as our next president and we will know have to see what kind of president he will turn out to be.

  12. Like everything else Trump did, this comment blew up in the news and further convinced those against him that his presidential run was coming to end. However these comments he made didn't lose him any supporters because those who supported him did not take anything he said or did into account. However, most importantly this comment didn't suddenly give Hillary more supporters, people didn't start liking Hillary more because they like Trump less.

  13. I do not think Trump is acknowledging defeat what so ever. If anything this is his attempt to use an excuse to if he loses. Trump does not seem to be one to ever admit to defeat, thus he will use whatever excuse he can come up with. This does show Trump to be a slight sore loser if he does in fact end up losing the election. Trump will continue to fight for this election to receive results that he can accept.

  14. I think that Trump is doing the exact opposite of acknowledging defeat. It is just another way of him stating that he is egotistic. I think Trumps claims that the election is rigged to the extent of the medias coverage on his views, but all the media is doing is exposing what he says. If he thinks its unfair coverage, he should stop saying absurd things.

  15. If Trump would have lost I believe that he would eventually acknowledge his defeat. Despite his arrogance I believe that he would eventually realize consequences of not acknowledging defeat. This would lead him to acknowledge defeat. His claim about rigging are not valid as their has been no evidence found that it has indeed been rigged. On the other hand the opposite can be said for Hillary. As more information on Russia's hacking surfaces it leads me to question the election more and more.

  16. Do you think Trump is Acknowledging defeat? No I think Trump is not willing to acknowledge defeat instantly. However, I believe that after a while he will eventually acknowledge that he has lost. Trump has too much pride to admit defeat right after if he would have lost.

  17. I don't think Trump is acknowledging defeat. Instead he is trying to remove the fault from himself if he does not win by blaming his possible loss on "a questionable result". He refuses to accept defeat regardless if he wins or loses.
