Donald Trump Proposes Term Limits for Congress

After he unveiled a new ethics plan, Donald Trump added one more potential reform to his wish list: A Constitutional amendment to impose term limits on members of Congress.
“If I’m elected president, I will push for a Constitutional amendment to impose term limits on all members of Congress,” Trump said at a campaign rally in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Tuesday afternoon, to sustained cheers from the crowd. “Right? They’ve been talking about that for years.”
Trump’s campaign elaborated on the proposal in
a press release emailed during the speech.
“Decades of failure in Washington, and decades of special interest dealing, must come to an end,” it says. “We have to break the cycle of corruption, and we have to give new voices a chance to go into government service. The time for Congressional term limits has arrived.”
Trump is correct that Republicans have been kicking this idea around for years. It traces back to the “Contract With America” that congressional Republicans proposed in 1994, which included a measure that would have imposed a maximum term of 12 years for both senators and members of the House. The measure failed; it didn’t win two thirds of both the House and Senate required for passage.
Newt Gingrich was House Speaker at the time and pushed for the term limit amendment, and he’s now a close adviser to Trump. Under the Constitution, the president plays no formal role in approving constitutional amendments.

Do you agree with Trump?

Do you think this limit on a term will be positive or negative?

Do you think people would agree with this new idea of trumps? if so why or why not?

  1. I do not agree with Trump because incumbents should have the right to keep running and winning their position in congress. Since the people in their district or state like them, they should at least have the ability to run for congress multiple times.

  2. I disagree with Trump. There is a term limit on the presidency because the president is just one person, but with Congress, since there are multiple members, terms should not be limited. There are a number of chances for politicians to be elected to Congress, and if a certain Congressperson is well-liked and good at their job, they should be able to continue it and working for the country. This person will have influence, but they are not the sole representative of Congress, so if they remain in Congress for a long time, they do not gain a ridiculous amount of power.

  4. I’m not entirely sure if I agree or disagree with this proposal of Trump’s. On the one hand, I think it could aid in limiting the amounts of corruption in Washington, by ousting all members after a certain amount of time and possibly breaking cycles or coalitions of corruption. However, I think it could also have a very negative effect on Congress. One thing that most-everyone seeks is job security, and if people would know that they would be essentially fired after a certain number of years, that would definitely have an impact on the types of people who ran for office. Additionally, we would lose many of the most experienced Congress Members, who contribute a lot to the Congress, for no good reason. The idea that they would get ‘fired’ after a certain amount of time would be very damaging to the type of work they would do. I think it would create a type of ‘senioritis’ syndrome among Congress Members, in that, in the last few years of their terms, they would losing their seriousness and work ethic because they know they’re on their way out. Additionally, I think that if a constituency really values their Congress Member and doesn’t want to change them, they shouldn’t be forced to. In conclusion, I believe that there would actually be more negative effects than positive because giving Congress Members a set amount of time would not be a favorable work condition, would change the quality of their work (as their main motivation to succeed and do well in Congress is to get reelected) and would oust many valuable and experienced Congressmen Members who were loved by their constituencies and doing impactful work, for no good reason.

  5. Term limits would be a great opportunity because politicians would focus more on policy and ideals than being reelected. As we have seen with Presidents, they accomplish more when they are not trying to win another election because they are scared that people will not like their proposals or policy positions. If senators and Representatives faced the same limits, they would push for much more policy that would cause change.

  6. Do you agree with Trump? Yes I believe that congressman should have turn limits because lots of them often serve for very long periods of time. Proposing term limits would force new ideas to be brought in

  7. I agree with Trump that there should be limits on terms for congressmen. Placing limits on the number of times someone can hold office is good because it ensures that there will be new faces, brains and ideals coming in and out of office every couple years. Not only would this prevent incumbents from dominating the chairs, but it would probably help to decrease polarization because people won't be so entrenched in their party.
