President Elect Trump, has a lesser well known sister named Maryanne Trump Barry. While Barry may be more removed from the media's spotlight, she is still a renown and experienced judge. She serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit, and embodies the same straight forward attitude as her brother. Unlike Donald however, Maryanne Trump is greatly more liberal in her political views. While some of her peers such as Judge Mathew Stiegler have characterized Judge Barry as a moderate-conservative Republican, her pro-choice and economical rulings have suggested other wise. Early in his campaign Trump voiced his opinion that she was a "great" judge and joked about appointing her to the High Court. Due to this, other candidates such as Ted Cruz took advantage of that statement and used it against Trump during his campaign.
1. After reading about her previous involvement and convictions as a judge do you believe Maryanne Trump to be a moderate-conservative or more liberal?
2. What do Donald Trump and Maryanne Barry have in common? How do they differ both politically and socially?
3. What are the chances that Trump nominates his sister for the High Court (especially after already involving his immediate family in political affairs)? If Maryanne was nominated how would that affect his approval rating and chance for reelection?

I personally find it very unlikely that Trump will nominate Maryanne Barry to the Supreme Court. He will not do it because he has already said he wants to appoint a highly conservative justice, and Maryanne is not highly conservative, she is seen as liberal by almost everyone. If she was nominated, this would make his approval ratings lower, and his chance for reelection slimmer. People who voted for Trump wanted change, and the change most wanted was to turn away from being so liberal and turn to more conservative. Because of this Trump will not elect his sister because it will hurt his approval ratings.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Michael. It is extremely unlikely that Trump will nominate his sister, Maryanne Barry. Although Trump was previously a Democrat and more liberal, he understands the possible repercussions of nominating his sister. Whoever Trump nominates will serve on the court long after Trump is in office. With this in mind, the Republican Senate will never confirm her nomination. In addition, such nepotism would have long lasting consequences on the Republican party, not just Trump's approval ratings.
ReplyDeleteI also concur with the previous responses that it is highly unlikely that Trump will nominate his sister to serve on the Supreme Court. Although it is clear that Trump is very fond of his sister, she is definitely on the more liberal end of the spectrum. Nominating her would hit Trumps approval rating very hard based on the fact that she is liberal and his sister. Trumps supporters obviously want to a shift from the past eight years toward a more conservative future, which cannot be accomplished with his sister on Supreme Court. Along with that appointing someone within your family to a position of that much power reflects poorly upon Trump.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Trump will not nominate his sister to serve on the Supreme Court, even though he has involved other immediate family in his political affairs. There is a very slim chance Trump ever nominates her because her views differ from Trump's greatly. Judge Barry is a moderate-conservative Republican, while Trump is looking to nominate a very conservative judge to the Supreme Court.
ReplyDeleteI do not think Trump will nominate his sister. For one, Barry is not on the list of 21 people from whom Trump has pledged to pick his nominee. For another, Barry, 79, is the older sister of the oldest man ever elected president. Presidents like their Supreme Court nominees to be a lasting legacy; Barry took senior status five years ago.
ReplyDeleteIn our modern day and age, conservative values do not make someone anti-gay or abortion. As we see many Republicans take a more libertarian view of our country, being pro-choice does not mean you have to be liberal.
ReplyDelete1. After reading about her previous involvement and convictions as a judge do you believe Maryanne Trump to be a moderate-conservative or more liberal? I believe that she is more of a conservative liberal. While she mainly represents liberal ideals, she is not 100% left.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Trump would nominate his sister because that would make it look like nepotism which could be very controversial and could result in less trust in Trump. Also, she's a liberal and I don't think he wants to be put in a position where his sister makes a disagreeable decision.
ReplyDeleteLooking at Trumps democratic history and this article it is clear to me that his sister is liberal. They are both similar because they both supported liberal values. However trump saw his opportunity to become president in the Republican party. This more than anything can explain Trump's switch from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party. He will not nominate his sister because in that case he would be accused of nepotism. Additionally she is not conservative which would not support his cause.
ReplyDeleteTrump's sister is definitely a liberal due to her past court decisions which makes it very unlikely that she will be appointed to the supreme court. Both Trump's are similar by the fact that they share some liberal viewpoints, even though Trump ran as a republican.
ReplyDeleteTrump's sister will almost certainly not be elected. She is absolutely a liberal, and for her to be elected would mean that Trump would be prioritizing his personal beliefs and the power of his family over the well being of the United States government. In doing this, he would severely harm his approval ratings, and his chances of reelection would drop drastically.
ReplyDeleteTrump will most likely not nominate his sister even though they may have similar views on some topics. Based on her past decisions, she is clearly a liberal and Trump is looking for a conservative to appoint to the Supreme Court.
ReplyDeleteTrump's sister most likely will not be elected as she is not qualified at all and looking at her previous decisions, she clearly identifies herself as a liberal and Trump wants to replace the SCOTUS seat to a conservative justice
