Trump University Settlement

Donald Trump Agrees to Pay $25 Million in Trump University Settlement

On 11/18, Trump settled his various Trump University lawsuits, including two federal class-action cases in San Diego and a lawsuit by New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman. Claims that Trump University "used high-pressure sales tactics and employed unqualified instructors" to cheat students "out of thousands of dollars in tuition through deceptive claims about what they would learn" sparked these lawsuits, and finally they have been settled: Trump must pay $25 million. Although these lawsuits have been around for months, Trump had not previously settled because he wanted to fight the allegations on "principle" and even denounced the California cases supposedly because of the judge's Mexican heritage. Now, as one of Trump's lawyers stated, the "resolution of these matters allows President-elect Trump to devote his full attention to the important issues facing our great nation."

Questions:
  1. If this settlement were reached a month ago, do you think it would have had an impact on the presidential election? Why or why not?
  2. Should he have paid more for this settlement?
  3. Will this have an effect on how people currently view Trump? Will this resolution be viewed negatively, positively, or will it be mostly ignored?

  1. If this settlement was reached a month ago, I believe it may cause more minorities and young adults to vote. During the election in just a week before, the voter turnout among the young adults and minorities were lower than expected. I believe Trump should've paid more because he was also causing mental stress to the students and their families. If they acknowledge about this incident, more of them may actually went out and vote. I don't think this will significantly change people's current view on Trump, some people will still remain disliking him while others will still defend him, and the rest will ignore this incident.

  2. Trump should have been ordered to pay more in the settlement because enrollees in Trump University lost an estimated $40 million from the seminars. Also, for a class action law suit, the settlement was small and was not what the opposition wanted. Trump may have had something that he could have used to win the case if it was taken farther. So the opposition just settled for what Trump was willing to give.

  3. I don't think this will have a negative effect on Trump (and so far it hasn't really) simply because people have become accustomed to controversy with Trump that people don't really care anymore. In addition, the media's mass coverage on Trump right now, including his cabinet appointments, policy reversals, Hamilton/Pence issue, etc, is as always distracting the American public from focusing in on the Trump University settlement. Sadly, people either don't care or are too occupied by his many other controversies :(

  4. If this settlement had been reached before the election, I don't think it would have had an effect on the outcome. Voters ignored many more of Trump's mistakes, including the tapes that were released, so I don't believe this would have changed people's minds. Also, the current timing of this event will most likely not affect people's views of Trump because it is not as publicized as other events, making it more difficult for people to find information about it and form an opinion. Unfortunately, this most likely will not affect Trump's approval ratings.

  5. If the settlement would of been reached a month ago, I think it wouldn't of had much of an effect on the outcome. The large majority of Trump supporters are people that won't be easily convinced not to vote for Trump. He has said and done many harsh things before this settlement came to light, and if those didn't affect Trump supporters' opinions of him, this wouldn't of either.

  7. I believe if this settlement was reached a month ago it would have definitely had an impacted on what happened with the election. If he made the settlement before he was elected it would have made Trump look like he was admitting to what he had done was wrong. But with the recent election occurring now it makes him look like he is putting the country before his own personal matters no matter how much it costs him.

  8. This settlement will be mostly ignored by the majority of the population. Those who already support Trump will ignore the settlement, because Trump's actions don't affect their views of him as shown countless times. Those who are against Trump will just have a reason not to like him. In the end Trump will not gain or lose any supporters based on this settlement.

  9. I do not think that the public will think much of this settlement. Although some people claim this is corrupt, President-elect trump does currently have a lot on his plate. By him settling he is able to focus on all of the other major steps toward entering the white house. I know people are upset with the outcome of the case, but I think that is something that will eventually be able to get past.

  10. As we have seen, the majority of the country does not care about the settlement because it does not effect him. People are already in awe by Trump's business and do not care about his mishandling. The settlement will have no effect on his presidency nor will it bring any debate about him.

  11. If the settlement had been reached within the last few weeks of the election, it definitely would have been an impact on the results. As we saw, a little over a month before voting day, Trump's audio comments seemed like the biggest controversy possible. However, he still prevailed in the elections because, unfortunately, Hillary also had a minor scandal with the FBI investigation. What made the impact was that hers was much more recent and fresh on people's minds during voting day.

  12. I don't this would've had a negative effect on Trump's campaign because it is clear that the voters don't care about what Trump does/has said. He has made inappropriate sexual comments about women and has been a racist and a bigot, and he still won. If voters were able to disregard all of that, I think they would've disregarded this also.

  13. If this settlement was reached a month ago, it would have definitely made an impact on the election because Trump was able to clinch the presidential candidacy because of the E-mails released by the FBI. People believed Hillary would win the presidential election because of his "Locker Room Talk" but the last minute email scandal caused Hillary to lose.

  14. Should he have paid more for this settlement? I think that because of the fact that he ruined so many peoples lives and time, he should've been forced to pay more. By falsifying a university and giving fake degrees, he wasted thousands of peoples time and money and in return they are only getting a fraction back.

  15. If this case happened a month ago it could have played a huge role in the election, in the same way that the CIA re opening their case over Hillary's emails. Trump should have paid more due to the fact that he cheated so many people out of their money while he was getting rich off of it. I doubt ti will have an impact of people's thoughts on Tump as their minds have already been made up due to his past actions.

  16. I believe that the perspectives on Trump are still far too polarized for this case to have any effect. Those in support of Trump will either ignore it or feel that he has been cheated out of $25 million. Those who are against Trump will use this as another reason to be against him. The number of people who's opinions can still be swayed without some drastic event is very low, causing this case to lack significance in the public eye.

  17. If this case had occurred a month ago I think there would have been no effect whatsoever on Trump's campaign. Trump showed several times throughout the election cycle that he and his campaign was completely immune to scandals that would typically end a politicians chances at office. Trumps campaign was so unorthodox that nothing could have stopped it.

  18. I don't think an earlier settlement would have impacted the presidential election. Most of Trump's issues and flaws were already made public, and people already chose to looks past them or dislike him for them based on what they knew about him.

  19. I honestly believe that an earlier settlement would not have changed anything. Trump has had several scandals and none of them really affected him. Trump should have been responsible to pay more. There was no way that this settlement was going to halt his journey to the white house.
